Symbols & allegories in Italian Renaissance music

This album, awarded the “Luister 10” seal by the Dutch magazine Luister, explores the many characters of late 16th- and early 17th-century Italian ensemble music. Angels, Arcadian shepherds, and gypsies – recurring figures in music, literature, and visual arts – inspire the repertoire. Motets by Corfini, Agostini, Trombetti and Rossi evoke celestial voices; elegant dances by Alberti, Molinaro and Rossi, and instrumental works by Cavazzoni, Guami and Andrea Gabrieli reflect harmony and beauty; while compositions by Ruffo, Frescobaldi and Trabaci challenge traditional rules with inventive flair.

“When all recorder players play together it almost sounds like an organ, but with the expression of a woodwind ensemble. A fantastic CD.” – Marcel Bijlo, Tijdschrift Oude Muziek, August 2013
